Christopher Newport University stands out in my mind for a few reasons. First, I had the largest turn out of any host site. It was a packed auditorium, and the students did a great Q&A with me. I was supposed to come early for a filmmaking workshop, but the professor cancelled last minute. That was a bummer, but the large turnout made me happy. My host John was wonderful, the questions were insightful as well as challenging.
The second thing which stood out was the rain. Wow did it pour for 2 days straight! Like a torrential downpour. I stayed in Richmond, so the drive was about an hour to CNU. I actually had to pull over because the rain and fog were so bad! it had stopped by the time I arrived, and the campus was bathed in an ethereal glow from the fog. It’s a pretty campus, I was surprised to learn it’s all brand new, just made to look older.
It was a last stop on the tour, so back to New York I went. I would have loved to visit even more locations, the experience has been memorable and enriching. I could have used less driving, the one Amtrak trip of the bunch seemed so relaxing! But I did get to listen to all of NPR’s Serial while driving through Virginia, and West Virginia…so there are bonuses to so much car time! Thank you to Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation and all the host sites for having me!
